The Untold Story of Our Roots
One Act of Kindness Changed Thousands of Lives
In the late 1990s, Jim Oelschlager, a patient in an Akron hospital, crossed paths with Dr. Timothy Carrabine. Another physician had asked for an internist to examine Jim, and Dr. Carrabine agreed. He spent time answering questions, providing treatment, and continued to follow up with Jim's care even after he left the hospital.
That simple act of compassion began a relationship built on trust. Before long, Dr. Carrabine became Jim's primary physician.
Jim had been living with MS since 1973. Although he built a highly successful investment firm, Oak Associates, he never forgot the challenges of living with the disease. He believed everyone with MS deserved access to specialized, compassionate care, regardless of their ability to pay.
As their friendship grew, Jim and Vanita shared their dream of creating a dedicated MS clinic. They encouraged Dr. Carrabine to leave private practice and lead the effort. He agreed, and recruited registered nurse Patti Blake, who also lived with MS and understood patients' needs firsthand.
Working together, Dr. Carrabine, Patti, Jim, and Vanita designed The Oak Clinic, which opened in 2000 with just two staff members and a small number of patients.
The clinic quickly earned a reputation for exceptional, patient-centered care. Patients traveled from across the region, and the clinic expanded to include an infusion center, pharmacy, education, and wellness programs.

A Lasting Legacy
Jim and Vanita remained deeply involved, providing leadership, encouragement, and generous support as The Oak Clinic grew. Jim passed away in 2024 after living with MS for 51 years, but his vision continues to guide the clinic. Vanita remains an active member of The Oak Clinic Board of Directors.

“I think people are going to be surprised how good things get. The best is still yet to come.”
— Jim Oelschlager

Our Mission
Every great organization begins with a simple belief. At The Oak Clinic, ours is that every person living with Multiple Sclerosis deserves access to compassionate, comprehensive care that addresses not only the disease, but the whole person.
Founded to serve individuals and families affected by MS, The Oak Clinic was built on the understanding that managing a lifelong neurological condition requires more than medical treatment alone. It requires education, support, rehabilitation, advocacy, research, and a community that understands the challenges patients face every day.
Like the oak tree from which we take our name, we strive to be a source of strength, stability, and resilience. What makes The Oak Clinic unique is our holistic approach: physicians, nurses, therapists, social workers, counselors, and educators work together to create personalized care plans that help patients navigate the complexities of MS. Our goal is not simply to treat symptoms, but to help individuals maintain their independence, preserve their quality of life, and achieve their personal goals.
As a nonprofit organization, The Oak Clinic remains dedicated to ensuring that financial circumstances never stand in the way of receiving exceptional care.
For many patients, The Oak Clinic is more than a healthcare provider. It is a trusted partner, a source of hope, and a place they proudly call home.
